Agricultural Resource Management

The District can assist you with any resource concern: soil, water, air, plants, or animals.

Our local (Polk SWCD), state (Iowa Department of Agricultural and Land Stewardship-Division of Soil Conservation) and federal (Natural Resources Conservation Service) staff provide free technical assistance in protecting these resources and can also assist with applications for funding assistance.

Best Management Practices (BMPs)

All technical assistance follows the USDA-NRCS Field Office Technical Guide Specifications for practices. It is recommended that your contractor follow these specifications. For more information on a specific practice, you can view the Iowa Conservation Practice Standards.

Grassed Waterway

Overview

A natural drainage way is graded and shaped to form a smooth, bowl-shaped channel. This area is seeded to sod-forming grasses. Runoff water that flows down the drainage way flows across the grass rather than tearing away soil and forming a gully. An outlet is often installed at the base of the drainageway to stabilize the waterway and prevent a new gully from forming.

  • Grass cover protects the drainage way from gully erosion.
  • Vegetation may act as a filter, absorbing some of the chemicals and nutrients in runoff water.
  • Vegetation provides cover for small birds and animals.
